Yes, in this case it is much like a violin but without the waist. There are three main kinds of mandolins that I have seen and worked on; the tater-beetle or nun's head(with a lute shaped back and flat top) the Army-Navy, which is flat on both sides and the archtop, which is basically similar to a violin except it has both a bass and a treble bar instead of a bass bar and soundpost like a violin. I think it has to do with the extra stress caused by having 8 strings instead of 4, but I don't know for sure. Zach
