We typically disked 6 to 8 inches deep, with a "disk tiller" passing twice at 90 degrees first, then two or three passes with the field cultivator over the period of several days. Allowing for the sun to dry out the surfaced roots. Also did a nice job in place of a 3 section drag (spring tooth harrow.)
