Living in Cabarrus County I can assure you that this isn't somewhere you want to be if your looking for affordable anymore. Twenty years ago 'rural' land out here was around $3-5000 an acre, now it's in the low teens. From what I've heard about prices in surrounding areas you can still buy in Anson County for decent prices. In Anson your far enough from Charlotte, Concord, etc to still be really rural but still close enough to be somewhat convenient to find parts and supplies.
Too, like someone else said I've heard that as you head East from here, toward the coast, that you can still get some good deals there, and the same holds true as you get up into the edge of the mountains.
