A bearing is likely with the prior sound. Tearing off the top will tell the tale. It could be an easy repair if no further effort is made to make it go. A needle or ball between gears will ruin parts radically. Look at every tooth on every gear from root to crest. Look at all bearings input , trans pilot, and rear main as well as the countershaft ball bearings. Rear bull gear ball bearings also can wedge between the pinion and bull gear, or the bull and case.
