Speaking as a former Deputy, California is a presumption state, if someone is in your house that should not be and you shoot them it is presumed a clean shoot. However that is rebutable. If you don't understand that, study that before you shoot anyone. California's presumption law is far better than the Castle laws other states have, and we have had it for 100 years or so. Understanding the law is most important. As for the weapon, In California use a Mini 14 with a wood stock as it came from the factory, use factory ammo, or your duck gun.You don't want anyone to think your were looking for a fight. The last thing you want is some politically motivated DA presenting your M4 clone, shooting explosive ammo you hand loaded , or a short barrel black plastic shotgun, to a jury. I am just suggesting, do as you want.
