Not sure why you would need to protect yourself from 1000 yards.
I found the M1 Garand to be way to heavy. Only good for snipping. Only holds a few rounds taking your eyes of the emeny to reload.
I have a M1 Carbine. 30 round clip and good for anything between 50 and 200 yards (300 with pratice). Light weight, easy to move about with.
30-30 would be my choice if I didn't have the M1. But with it you have to cockit taking your gun off target. M1 is semi-auto and I can put three shots down range in the same time your sighting in your second shot.
Little closer and I op't for a short barrel 12GA. First shot a slug followed with a buck shot. After two shots your goning to be looking for the next target.
Hand guns I am still looking. I have a 45 semi-auto that I like for the speed and reloading. But its kind of heavy. 357 revolver is OK shooting but reload is a PITA and not good if you need it fast. Friend has 40 semi-auto that I am itching to try out.
