M-1, nice suprise from a distance yes, but as mentioned earlier, you cannot defend property with deadly force, especially when you are at a distance which most likely would determine that you are safe and able to retreat and avoid a deadly confrontation. I just talked to a guy today who was prosecuted years ago in Montana when he lived on his families ranch for pulling a gun on trespassing hunters. Usually a shotgun and pistol are your main self defense guns because of the distance at which self defense enounters occur. As a farm gun for shooting varmits then I can see the M-1, however that guns is really out dated compared to alot newer varmit models.
