The M1 would definately do the job, but be sure to look into your state's laws. Here in Iowa you can only defend life, not property with deadly force and the person wishing to do harm to you better be within range close enough to do bodily harm or you may end up losing the lawsuit.
Myself, I utilize a 1911 .45, 9mm S&W, and a Ruger .38spl for home defense. Also a few other rifles and shotguns in the safe.
