We have gotten used to paying very little for products then simply throwing them out when they no longer work and buying another cheap, poor quality one.
It would be very difficult for any company that wants to start making common everyday household items in North America because of a few key things.
1. Wages (also healthcare etc.)
2. Price of electricity
3. Building something of quality means it will cost more than the import stuff hence many people couldn't afford it.
4. Environmental laws that make it very difficult to manufacture anything in North America without more red tape (hence more $$$$)
5. With there being so many fewer good paying jobs there is less $$ to go around so your market is correspondingly smaller
So while I would love to see it, I can't imagine it ever happening. It would be a VERY slow process, probably taking 50-75 years to undo what has been done in the past 20-30 years.
