There is sort of a garden catalog watchdog site/group at the link below. Many of the old companies are owned by one company now but continue to publish independent catalogs to entice you to buy more, from them because of experience, etc.
My motto is to each their own. I don't have a problem with anyone planting open pollinated varieties, growing with chemical assistance or growing organically.
As for me I prefer to use hybrid varieties, chemical fertilizers because I no longer have easy access to natural ones, and I will use pesticides when I deem them to be necessary.
Rather than use insecticides on some crops I'd rather use a row cover or simply not grow that particular crop.
I do still like to support some of the companies of old that do a lot of varietal research and am willing to pay more for their seeds to support such. Burpee has given us excellent varieties for decades and I will continue to support them.
To a point I'm also willing to buy Roundup vs. generic glyphosate so that Monsanto will continue spending research dollars.
