Did you just refuse to give it to them? Most likely it's optional but they ask for it without telling you that you don't have to give it out.
As far a credit card, I really don't like the trend of getting a CC# and automatically billing every month. I can see why they want to do it but no thanks, send me a bill and I'll decide if I want to pay it or discontinue service.
I read recently that 80% of America On Line's revenue comes from people who signed up years ago, don't need or use their service anymore, but are still being charged every month.
