You guys are talking about freezer thermometers - I use the digital thermometers with the temp sensor on a wire. Just throw the sensor in the fridge and hang the readout nearby. If you have a power outage - it will help you resist the temptation of opening the lid to check on the contents, and I can check them daily without dumping the cold out. And a lot of them have a "history" function. I've always wanted to splice in some thermostat wire and mount the readout up in the house so I wouldn't have to go to the basement to check on them. Haven't tried it yet.
I've tried the wireless type - they worked for awhile, but the batts don't last long.
One of our freezers runs around -5 degrees, the other about +2 degrees. When the power goes down, I let them get up to +15 and then plug them into the genny.
