Comp insurance should cover it . Of course no ice is ever "safe" but it is driven on around here all the time. You normally feel that if you have to drill through two feet of ice one day it is safe the next. Currents are what will get you. Minn had good freeze on most central located lakes before we got snow but that being said, once heavy snow sits on ice for a few days the ice under it can dwindle. Totally depends on the situation. I never feel good about driving on it but have many times, quit ice fishing about ten years ago though. Far as seat belt, they don't always come off that easy, especially if you are in a panic situation. Always recommended to unstrap before going out on the ice and lots drive with opened windows. Not appropriate to call some one an idiot or worse. We all drive down the highway at 70 miles and hour with another vehicle comeing at us with only four to six feet between us when we meet, would you stand out there that close to oncoming traffic.
