Mom and Pop may not be perfect including their attitude towards others in the community but a majority of the time they put the money they make back into the community where they operate. That sucking sound you hear down at Wally World is all the cash being pulled out of your community going to Betonville then a lot of that goes to China. I don't fault Sam Walton for making a buck but he pretty much admitted back in the day he did not care whose back he stepped on to make that buck. Not much different than the robber-barons from a hundred years ago or so.
