I was once Director of Buildings and Grounds for a public school district. The Superintendent and I got along only marginally. I finally figured out one thing he held against me was the fact that I'd been to college. I guess in his warped thinking building maintenance people had no business going to college. No matter that I had 15 people working for me, wrote my own budget and operated within it, met with construction and engineering professionals on various projects, programmed computerized heating systems, blah, blah, blah.
I proved it. I could be having a perfectly congenial and sociable conversation with him, and if I intentionally injected something into the conversation about a class in college, his attitude would flip 180 degrees and the conversation would be over.
