I'm in a rural area and not really commuting distance to any major work-areas. There have never been many jobs around here that paid much - except for things e.g. doctors, school teachers, or college professors. Some drive a lot of miles and work as prison-guards. Those that do tend to stay a work a week at a time, to avoid the long commute every day.
I know half a dozen people to went to work for Walmart, and are doing very well. That "doing well" is in their opinions, not mine. The ex-dairy farmer I mentioned earlier bought a house locally, owns a car, and has no debts. First time in 30 years I've seen him that solvent. He's the only one I know that actually works in the store; the others work in the big Walmart warehouse near here - or drive trucks for Walmart. $10 a hour with benefits, with no long commuting, is not considered a "bad job" around here. But, I have no idea what any of these people make.
