The erratics also occur in areas that had glacial lakes during the ice age. Icebergs would calve off the glaciers and float around the huge lakes. The rocks were inside the icebergs, and as they melted, they eventually dropped off the rocks, sometimes in unusual places. Finding erratics in high places suggests how deep the water must have been in the glacial lakes.
We have lots of them in my area. They are easy to identify because they are so rounded and often are very different rock than most of what is around here. Some are too big to move, but most of them in our cultivated area have been rolled to the sides of the fields.
