About theft, in about 1856 when the city of Omaha was in it's infancy, virtually everyone heated and cooked with firewood. A fellow in the Florence area of North Omaha had a firewood business where he would go into the hills north of Omaha, cut firewood, and haul it to his lot in Florence where he would retail it.
The fellow noticed a certain amount of pilferage from his lot. He took a couple dozen pieces of firewood, bored a 1" hole in the center, filled them with gunpowder, hammered a plug back into the end, and placed them where they would be easily swiped.
When stoves around the neighborhood began blowing up with regularity, the pilferage stopped.
