You should every now and then discharge it more. I have found that if you deep cycle a battery every now and then they last longer.
I had the habit of putting my cordless Dewalt battery in the charger after every use, no matter how little. My batteries where not lasting very well. I called DeWalt and they said that if you keep a battery topped off all of the time it loses storage life. Since then I run them down until they just about quit. They do seem to be lasting better. I know this is not as big as a battery as your gulf cart but the principle should be the same.
