You could go to where they sell them and buy an item called a "Speedy Stitcher", it's what all the old farmers/ ranchers used to sew together leather used with the horses. Give it to your wife and see what she could come up with while you're watching one of those old war movies that they don't care about. I bought mine about thirty years ago and the wifey just got introduced to it the other night when the strap pulled off from her favorite Bible packing bag. You could probably take your soldering iron and melt a hole near the end and use a bolt,nut and flat washers to make a temporary loop.
