Seems a shame to cut them down unless you are 100% sure you'll never need them for something else. I have many of the 27 footers, and all are made so they can be doubled-over before being threaded through the slot in the little crank-spool. Doubled over, they are only half the length. Thus no good reason I can think of to cut them shorter. 27 feet seems to be a standard size for the better HD straps.
