Yes one person was killed in rusty van with many, many miles on it. And, his wife stated they had never thought of actually inspecting the vehicle underneath to check for metal integrity, rust, etc. Whose fault is that? Certainly not Ford's. Note also that his axle did not just "fall off." There were several other connective parts that had failed before the axle failed, and had gone un-repaired.
I suggest you look closely at the photos of that van, and also look at some diagrams on how the rear of the Windstar suspension is actually put together.
As I stated earlier, who is really to blame when a person drives an older, rusty, high-mile vehicle and something fails? The owner, that's who. If he/she can't inspect it themselves, then they ought to find somebody who can. And if they cannot even do that, they should not be driving a car.
