First of all, DO IT OUTSIDE!! Mosture from making only a few quarts of syrup will ruin a kitchen and half the house.
It can be done on a small scale without a big cash outlay. Go to a sheetmetal shop and have a flat pan made. Make a cementblock stove to set it on with a door on one end and a smoke pipe on the other end.
Not a high production setup but you can make all the syrup a family can use with it.
I have done this and have helped several get started this way.
