The longer you boil, the darker the syrup is going to be. All depends on what you like, how much time you have, and how much extra fuel you've got to burn.
For myself, I prefer dark "B" syrup over the clear A or AA "fancy" stuff.
Many people make syrup small-scale on single-pans and do fine with it. Some use pots on a fire and block wall around it.
If you could run your sap through an osmosis machine, and take out half the water before you start boiling, it makes things go much better. That doesn't work though, unless you've got a friend with an osmosis machine.
