Recently purchased a used 3pt log splitter. Older model, Northern Tool unit. Running it on my John Deere 4510 compact untility tractor (40 horse). So I set the throttle at 1,300 rpm's, and split wood. Every once and a while I hit a tough log that the splitter will not handle, however what happens is I hear the valve bypass (i think that is what is happening, howl coming from the valve) and it will not split.
When this occurs there is no difference in the engine,,,, purring along, does not seem under strain. Given this I'm thinking I should turn the relief valve pressure up some to increase the load?
If I over load the bucket on this machine, or even my backhoe attachment the engine will load up and work hard. The splitter seems to be licking out too easy??
