Don't under or over charge a lead acid battery. A lead acid battery under ideal conditions should to exceed a temp of 78F. Deep cycling from short stop-start duty. Or if somebody can't remember to shut off the headlights and runs a battery dead. Rapidly ruins batteries. Baking soda neutralizes battery acid. A dead battery's electrolyte is a weak acid. A fully charged battery's electrolyte is very acidic. If a battery's only problem was shorted plates then flushing may wash the short away. Then again that "gunk" in the bottom of the battery is plate material. What went wrong to have the plates deteriorate and become bottom sludge? Once a battery starts to fail. The only solution is to break down the battery, re-melt the lead and purify.
