The spinning bit, the possiblity of the wood slipping off the support & spinning, makes them more dangerous.
Fastest way to split wood tho, and on the scale of danger, it's not at the top on my list. ;) Heck just working with the cattle is far more dangerous, less control of a situation.
I have a Bark Buster I think brand, more of a pipe frame, the wood can start rotating around real suddenly if it slips off my pipe, that gets your attention.
I run it at idle, if it gets in tough wood just stalls out the 37hp tractor it;s on, keep things slow & steady.
