Most of the newer vehicles, (and your Mustang is probably one of them,) do not have the "cross the wire, and watch them flash," option.
For $40 to $60 you can probably get a simple code reader that will read your codes. That"s what I have, and it has answered a lot of questions for me. At least, it answered the what"s the code and should I panic problem. They won"t do all the things the big commercial multi thousand dollar units do, but you probably don"t need that anyway.
