My Dad always called it "anchor ice"; not sure if that is the correct term. Anyway......When it gets very cold (like it has been here for the last 4 or 5 days) The earth under the streams will actually become so cold that ice will begin to build up at the bottom of the stream bed. As can be seen in the picture, sometimes (in the stiller areas) ice begins to form on top as well and the result is a dam and the water will become very deep. When I was a kid, my younger brother and I were fascinated with the depth of water in our little creeks but my Mom would get very nervous if we went anywhere near them for fear that we might fall in and drown. A real concern that we couldn"t appreciate at the time. Sometimes when the weather warms, the anchor ice will let loose and there will be large areas of flat ice 2 or 3 feet above the new water level. I guess I"m still fascinated by it all? LOL BTW, I"m a 69 year old kid now! another LOL
