There were helmets way before 1974 but they didn't become standard equipment until well into the 80's. They were mandatory for new players coming into the league in 1979 but players already in the league could use the grandfather clause and not have to wear them. Paul Henderson was one of the most famous regarding a helmet in the 1972 summit series. His helmet probably saved his life when he went head first into the boards. Dave
