Do yourself a favor, build a machine shed and buy a cheap trailerhouse to set beside it. A decent one can be had for $3000 in my area.
In four or five years when you are ready to build a house you already have the hookups and utilities in place. Sell the trailer for $2000 and call it good.
If you build your house in your shop you'll have so much invested in it you have to keep living in it, or pay serious money to tear it out to get the storage room back.
