I've tried all sorts of bait and the only thing that worked for my rats was birdseed. Needed a live trap for that. Then you have a live rat to dispose of, or shoot in the cage.
I take mine to some scuzzballs a mile down the road who tried to break into my shop 2 consecutive nights a few years ago. Followed the oil drips back to their trailer. Don't know if they noticed the increased rat population there. I enjoyed it.
