I would think that "finger sized bamboo" wouldn't be much tougher than mature johnson grass, although I have never cut any bamboo. Most sickles will cut whatever will fit between the guards if you don't get froggy and let it slowly eat. I don't recommend treating a sickle mower like that, although I admit having cut an occasional sprout with mine. You can expect a bent section from cutting sprouty material, but sometimes you will get lucky.
