It sounds like you are on the right track with the EGR valve. It's easy to remove and check for leaks. I'd also look closely at the TBI base gasket, as they are notorious for developing leaks. Also be sure to check the computer engine grounds, especially the wire on the thermostat housing. I have moved several of them to another bolt on the intake manifold because of corrosion at the stat housing. If those things don't fix it, then you need to check the ignition and the fuel pump/filter. HTH Good Luck and God Bless
