Once you"ve shared the subdirectories like Jack said, you should be able to just type in desktoppcname in the "search" box in Windows 7 and it come up, where desktoppcname is the NETBIOS name of your PC.
You might also be able to see it and/or browse to it in network neighborhood, but there are a ton of things that can affect that, like are firewalls turned on, are both PCs in the same workgroup, is browsing service on, what type of router you have, etc, etc...
If it is easier, you can also share a folder on your laptop, find it on the network from your desktop, and "push" your files across to the new laptop...
The network will almost certainly be a lot faster (assuming 100Mb router/switch) than USB.
