Price speculation is the only reason to buy ANY IPO. In theory, IPOs are priced below market value so the price will take off when shares go on the open market. There is, of course, no guarantee that will happen with any IPO, and the GM IPO is hardly typical.
Whether or not a stock pays a dividend has little to do with whether or not it is speculative. Anyone who bought GM stock a few years ago because of its fat dividend has now learned that lesson.
