Kirk, OBD II vehicles determine misfires through the relative change between the cam and crankshaft speed. The computer is programmed to "see" the speed up of the crank after the combustion event. If the crankshaft doesn't speed up enough a misfire is stored and if the misfire rate is great enough, by federal law, manufacturer's are required to set a fault code. P0301 is cyl#1 misfire, P0302 is cyl #2 misfire and so on. They calculate misfires through several RPM settings or windows.
