Have a bit of a problem. We lined our fireplace hearth with a slab of granite - about 1" thick, thinking we would eventually install a propane stove in the firebox. Well, the time has come. I want to drill a hole in the granite to run the gas line up through the ash pit from the basement. Propane compnay said sure - no problem. But when the installer got here he said he did not have anything he could drill through granite with. I remember the granite installer said we would have to drill the hole with a core borer when the time came.
I am concerned that there is enough room inside the firebox to drill the hole. I have about 5" of clearance from the back of the box. Is a core borer a special tool that takes up a lot of room? Or is it just a special bit in a heavy duty drill?
