I was hauling a tractor home Saturday - about 100 miles. 20 miles from home I looked in my rear view mirror and saw smoke coming from my front left trailer tire.
Tire was flat and the wheel had an odd angle to it - tipped in at the top.
The axle had broken. Not all the way through but fubar just the same. I called my pal Kenny who came with his trailer and we off loaded the tractor onto his. I limped home empty on 3 tires.
So tonight I ran it down to the big machine shop where he works and we did a jerry rig on the axle. We cut the end of the axle off the rest of the way then found a heavy piece of tubing to splice it back together. Had to turn the OD of the tubing down a bit on the lathe so we could drive it into the axle.
Drilled a few holes for plug welds. Then he welded the original axle back together - Without penetrating into the splice tube. I shot some Buff paint on the tin of his tractor while he welded.
I remembered to bring the camera this time.
Just a 7000 lb trailer. I sure wish I could afford a heavier one. One with 8 hole wheels instead of these 5 hole..
The pine boughs on the trailer are going to the brush pile at deer camp tomorrow.
