There once was a time when we had "mechanics". People who could figure out what your problem was and fix it. Almost all work was done "in-house".

Now we have "technicians" and "parts changers". Many times it now takes longer to diagnose a problem than to actually fix it. Starters, alternators, radiators, transmissions, carbs., etc. that used to be fixed in-house are now ordered new, rebuilt/reman., or sent off to someone else to repair.

Sadly, alot of stuff now is made where no normal human can/wants to work on it.

I wouldn"t want to own a 2011 model year vehicle in 2021. I"d much rather have owned the 1970 vehicle in 1980 (or 2010!).

Vehicles are now tin foil and plastic instead of steel. Doing this did gain some fuel mileage. Air bags are a great advancement in safety. I wouldn"t drive a 15 or so year old car or newer without them. I"m certain they have saved many, many lives. I live in a lake-effect snow belt. Along with 4-wd and ABS, air bags give many people a false sense of security, or even made them fearless. People think they can drive through anything anytime at 20% over the speed limit. People used to think that if you drove on ice at 70 mph you were nuts. Now everyone does it while talking on a cell phone or using other "devices".

Generally speaking, we as a society have grown to want everything to be at the touch of a button, or even less effort, and in this respect, people are only getting lazier. As long as this trend continues, more and more electro-gizmos, and computerized everything will be forthcoming.

To each his own, but I"d take a truck with an engine with a carburetor that needs rings/valves at 50K over this new stuff any day. Give me a manual transmission, crank windows, mechanical guages, doors that lock with keys, 2-speed wipers, power brakes, and a good heater. Power steering and AC are nice, but I could live without them(maybe not AC in newer vehicles that run well over 200 degrees, though). I wouldn"t mind changing thermostats seasonally and filing/changing points either. I don"t need cruise control, electric seats, automatic butt warmers, 27 wiper settings, satellite radio and gps, etc. It"s just BS that I would pay for and never use anyway.

FWIW: I bet the commercials with the Maytag repairman sitting around all of the time are true. He probably can"t fix the new appliances anymore either!

Rant over
