I put in 40 years at Cummins in Indiana including 9 years working with the Signature 600 and ISX engine program. The pistons have a steel top with aluminum skirt. The liners have always been iron. As you said, aluminum would not hold up. We did see some block or head issues in the early engines but that engine is one of the more reliable engines running today.
