If you got your door springs set right to lift by hand, then all you need is the 1/2 horse. Just set the springs so your wife can lift it by hand. Any more horsepower is overkill but some guys like me overkill things all the time. Unless there is a price break and a sale, 1/2 will be fine. Let the springs do the heavy lifting.
I had a crapsman/chamberlain and the plastic gear stripped out. Never figured out how to get it apart to replace the gear. Replaced the whole thing.
