Brian, you are entirely correct. The electric pump mounted on the block is nothing but trouble. The replacement kit that eliminates the block mounted pump and wires in a pump in the tank is much more reliable. When the delivery pump goes bad, then the injection pump goes bad also. I've replaced a lot of them over the years. I do not recommend installing the low fuel pressure light that is available. The only accurate way to monitor the fuel pressure is to put a good guage.
