If you could engage for times when you are doing a downhill stretch or have a tailwind, and disengage it for times when you are pulling hard or going uphill or have a tailwind, I'm sure you'd see some gain. You'd likely have to do a lot of experimentation and there are sure to be a lot of variables which affect the outcome.
I always liked the little car I had years ago with a 5 speed manual, I controlled the shift RPM and with that 5th gear (which I believe was an overdrive) the fuel economy was excellent.
