Even though there is clear coat it too gets contaminants stuck to it that just washing won't take off. I have been using a Meguiars 3 step system for years and it does a great job, you can really see the difference after each step. The first one cleans contaminants, the second is a polish and the third is a pure carnuba wax for protection. The depth and shine are much improved afterward, not to mention that it sheds water/dirt much better thus protecting the finish.
And don't even get me started on the touchless car washes, hand wash only!
