Most people change their engine oil too often but it doesn't hurt anything if they do it right. New cars with computer monitoring go unbelievable distances between changes. My son's BMW notifies him when an oil change is needed. Usually around 17k. That's with synthetic oil (Mobil I is OK, among others) and a really good filter. OD showing 225k+ and I'm sure that the engine will last as long as the rest of the car. US Army confirmed same years ago but they use spectrum analysis.
