At the insurance company where I frequently work, I recently came upon a case where people owed $20,000 on a car that was worth barely half that.
The car had chronic AC problems, and the people were fed up with trying to fix it, so they called the lender and asked that the car be repoed. It was obvious they thought that if the car was repoed, they'd simply walk away, free and clear. The lender contacted them and asked if they were sure that was what they wanted to do. They again told the lender to repo it.
Result was, the lender repoed the car, sold it at auction for $4,000, and sent the people a letter demanding the $16,000 difference within ten days. I never did hear the outcome.
I, myself, don't buy any vehicle I can't pay cash for. I don't drive the newest vehicles, but life is much simpler.
