In my county in Indiana, at least a few years back, there was no local police lab, and officers did NOT have drug testing kits with them. So if an "offender" was arrested on a Friday of a weekend with a Monday holiday, it was entirely likely that he'd spend Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and part of Tuesday in jail, with no bond, no lawyer, no hearing, no judge, and no testing of the substance until the State Police lab reopened on Tuesday.
So even if you were totally innocent, it was possible to spend up to 4 days in jail. Knowing this makes this story somewhat believable to me...because back then--and maybe even today--the cops just didn't do anything that would disturb a judge and his holiday weekend...EVER.
