As a longtime firefighter/paramedic/hazmat specialist I would beg people never to use a shop vac on anything that contained any kind of flamable materal. Shop vacs are not intrinsically safe. I once responed to a sitution where a electrician was killed when a shop vac expolded, he was using it to pull a little rag tied to a string through some plastic conduet. Apparently it was the solvent in the glue or the primer. In the right mixture of air and an ignition source a little fuel goes a long way. Much better to use compressed air on the upstream side. When we pull undergound gasoline tanks we use dry ice to get the oxygen and lower explosive level to zero. If that was my tank I would pull one of the valves and fill the tank full of water and apply all the heat I wanted.
