On my square bales, I paint the ends of the balls of twine before I put them in the baler. Use a cheap spray can, and soak the ends only of the balls. Spray can will do about 4 or 5 balls. When baled, this puts a short smudge of color on the twine on each bale. I can identify my hay if stolen or sold. If I get complaints, I can identify my hay from other the buyer might have gotten elsewhere. A different color each year allows me to track the year it was baled. Unless they were looking for this, folks would never pay attention to a smudge of color on the twine here and there.
